In the United States murders of transgender people increase in 2003
Gay.com / PlanetOut.com.- 30 murders were reported in 2003 against transgender people in this country, compared to the 27 reported in 2002. A panel of expert investigators that follow this issue released this information.
Regarding this, transgender activist Shawna Virago, from the San Francisco branch of the United Community Against Violence stated that this increase in murders could be attributed to several factors, among them the increase interest by the media, and in some areas of the country, an improved relationship between those in charge of upholding the law and the transgender community.
She added that domestic violence must also be taken into account in many of the murders of transgender people, an issue that is seldom mentioned.
“The belief that transgender people don't have legitimate ties is also a product of transphobia. It is often thought that we are like ladies of the night and this makes domestic violence a factor that is hardly ever taken into account”, explained Virago.
Jennifer Rakowski, from the National Coalition Project Against Violence commented that those who attack transgender people don't see their victims as human beings, “murderers see them as objects not people”, “this leads them to think that society will grant them permission to keep on killing”.
Meanwhile, Gwen Smith, who has been documented murders of transgender people through a Web page, said that as they become more visible, they become a greater target.
“As trans and LGBT rights become a more and more important to society, these murders are part of the reaction against them”, said Smith.
Other experts agreed with Smith when identifying the possible cause of the increase in violent acts as being the greater visibility of transgender people in the United States and the entire world. / Back to top
