Gay kiss causes a television station to be fined

365Gay.com Newscenter Staff (Athens) – A popular weekly Greek soap opera has found itself on the wrong side of the law over a gay kiss. The kiss, between two of the male characters on the drama Close Your Eyes, lasted only seconds. Nevertheless, the television station which broadcast the program was hauled up before the National Radio and Television Council which ruled the scene was "vulgar and unacceptable".
It fined Mega Television about $130,000.

The fine has angered the Greek gay community, and many writers. Television critic Popi Diamandakou , who writes for one of Athens largest dailies, called the decision "hypocritical" after shots of Britney Spears kissing Madonna at the MTV Awards were repeatedly shown without penalty. "The council tells us ... that it's OK to be tolerant but we shouldn't go too far," Diamandakou wrote in the daily Ta Nea newspaper. / Back to top
